- We finish our Jess Crate furniture with water-based lacquers rather than oil-based lacquers. While both varieties are applied in the same manner, oil-based resins and lacquers are composed of many groundwater pollutants and contain six times as many Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOCs) as water-based lacquers. VOCs are common in household products but are known to have harmful short-- and long-term health effects. Water-based lacquers are not only the safest option but also the most environmentally friendly. They also dry three times faster and are more UV resistant and durable than oil-based options today.
